Black hole
Interactive sculpture
August 2021
“Black Hole” invites viewers to explore the hidden world within trees, prompting a deeper appreciation for these vital members of our ecosystem. Created from a section of a tree salvaged from government-cleared land, this piece carries a message of conservation and understanding. The wood, bearing a natural scar, serves as a reminder of the impact of human intervention. Highly polished brass surfaces have been meticulously inlaid, creating a striking contrast with the organic texture of the wood.

A dusting of brass powder nestled within the central cavity evokes a sense of mystery and an “internal world” within the tree. This interactive element encourages a dialogue between the audience and the tree; by gently blowing into the opening, viewers can shift the brass powder, creating dynamic reflections and engaging with the tree’s “inner life.” “Black Hole” seeks to amplify the silent stories of trees, revealing their inherent beauty and complexity, and ultimately advocating for their preservation.
